The effect of SM plus conventional treatment versus conventional treatment in increasing PaO2 and decreasing PaCO2. D-value of the pre and post treatment was used for statistical analysis. MD and 95 % CI of random effect model were calculated for these trials. The pooled analysis indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between SM plus conventional treatment and conventional treatment alone on PaO2 (MD, 1.00; 95 % CI, 0.64–1.36; P < 0.00001) and PaCO2 (MD, 0.83; 95 % CI, 0.58–1.08; p < 0.00001).
