Table 1 Effect of MAK-4 and MAK-5 on H-ras-induced cell transformation in Rat 6 cells

From: MAK-4 and -5 supplemented diet inhibits liver carcinogenesis in mice

Treatment Exogenous H-ras gene Cytotoxicity (% survival) Foci/plate ± SD Relative number of foci**
None - 100 0 0.0
None + 100 15.3 ± 2.5 1.00
MAK-4 (500 μg/ml) + 79 13.0 ± 1.7 0.84

  1. Rat 6 cells transfected with an activated H-ras oncogene were replated in D5FCS growth medium at ~2.5 × 105/90 mm plates as described in Materials and Methods. The treatment groups were fed with D5FCS plus the herbal extracts one day after replating and throughout the remainder of the experiment. All cultures were fed twice a week. At day 18 from the time of transfection, the cultures were fixed with 10% formaldehyde, stained with Giemsa stain, and scored for transformed foci by focus formation assay. Triplicate plates were used for each experimental group. Cytotoxicity was based on cell numbers of each treatment group counted by Coulter Counter and expressed as percent of cell survival compared to the untreated control. ** The relative number of foci is the number of foci obtained from the treatment groups divided by those obtained from the no-treatment group.
